Coaching Mission

Each athlete I coach comes to me with a unique personality, physiology, reason for training and racing, experience in the sport, and set of life circumstances. I aim to learn as much as possible about each athlete I coach so I can honor and coach to each of these unique qualities and hence maximize the athlete's potential.

I believe in striving to learn about and understand every technical, physiological and psychological aspect of training and racing triathlon. I read everything I can on our sport—from books, to magazines, to novels, to blogs of professionals and amateurs, to formal abstracts and studies. I pride myself on understanding the big picture and the minutiae of triathlon and run training-- and in knowing how to apply my knowledge to your training so as to maximize your potential as an athlete and competitor.

I understand the challenges of balancing life commitment with life passion and I can help you to achieve that balance and live within it. That said, I expect a great deal from the athletes I coach. I strive to find and take on athletes who are committed and passionate about their sport. If this sounds like you, please shoot me an email and we can discuss how together we can take your training and racing to the next level.

About Me

I am a long course triathlete, a coach to endurance triathletes and runners, a wife, and a mother of three amazing children. When I'm not working at any of those things, I love to walk and play with my dogs (Ernie, a Boston Terrier, and Hazel, a yellow Labrador), garden, read, write and drink coffee. I am especially interested in the hybridization of daylilies—though I seem to be more successful as a coach than as one who can successfully hybridize! I read and write voraciously, usually while perfecting my coffee drinking habit. (I prefer 100% Kona coffee in case you were thinking of surprising me with a gift… J) To read about my training and racing adventures and mis-adventures and to view my ongoing list of current reads, visit my blog at Mary: IronMatron.
